Controlled Big Basin Fire May Bring Smokey Skies

Cal Fire to burn 800 acres in the state park.

A prescribed vegetation management burn is being conducted this week across about 800 acres in Big Basin Redwoods State Park, Cal Fire officials said.

Crews from the San Mateo-Santa Cruz Cal Fire unit will carry out the burn in the areas of Johansen, Gazos Creek and Middle Ridge roads in northern Santa Cruz and southern San Mateo counties beginning Wednesday.

Smoke may be visible in the burn area for several days, Cal Fire officials said.

The Santa Cruz Fire Department, Central Fire Protection District, Scotts Valley Fire District and other agencies will participate.
