Scotts Valley High Classes Canceled after Facebook Shooting Threats

A threat was made on Facebook and school was canceled in the middle of the night.

Scotts Valley High School students are home from school Friday due to safety concerns, the police department announced via Nixle alert.

"A threat was made against the students of Scotts Valley High School via a social media network, Facebook. Although the validity of this threat is still uncertain, as a safety precaution Scotts Valley High School is canceling all classes for the day," the alert said.

A message was posted around 10 p.m. Thursday on a Facebook page called Scotts Valley High School (not the school's official page) that said "If you go to school tomorrow, you will die."

The person who posted the message used an alias, which police are trying to trace back to an actual user today.

"We've dealt with cyber bullies before," Lt. John Wilson said. "It's getting to be more common that we'd like it to be."

Scotts Valley police stationed an officer at the closed high school and also sent officers to an elementary school and a middle school in Scotts Valley that remain open. 

According to the Santa Cruz Sentinel, there are no road closures in the area.
