All are welcome to join up at 6 p.m. Friday in front of Novato City Hall.

If you've felt helpless since the Sandy Hook massacre, PeaceNovato is providing a way to soothe your soul on Friday.

The grassroots group is staging a candlelight vigil at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21, in front of the Novato City Hall, at 901 Sherman St.

The event is designed shorten the 3,000-mile distance between the grieving residents of Newtown, Conn. and the hearts of all those touched by tragedy.

PeaceNovato is a collection of citizens who advocate for peace, social justice and the environment. Members have gathered at the Novato Fourth of July Parade and the Novato Farmers Market for many years and occasionally hold peaceful demonstrations on street corners.

This is a wonderful idea. This event is an opportunity for us here in Novato to gather as a community to show our love and concern for those affected by the horrific events in Newton last week. I am hopeful that this event will not be politicized by the organzier or any others on either side of this gun debate. This event should allow us to come together to remember the lives of these sweet innocent children and the adults we lost bravely defending them.
