Get Out in Scotts Valley: The Derby Girls, an Ice Cream Social and More

The Santa Cruz Derby Girls are back, Brook Knoll Elementary is loading up for some ice cream fun and the local farmers market continues to churn along.

Where/When: Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds, 2601 E. Lake Ave., Watsonville. Friday, 6-10 p.m. 

Why Go: Santa Cruz County Law Enforcement Officers will hit the track at Ocean Speedway and race against each other to raise funds for Special Olympics in this exciting event hosted by the Scotts Valley Police Department. A day at the track lets you contribute to a worthy cause along with getting to see some high-intensity racing up close and personal.

Where/When: Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Sunday, 9-11 a.m. 

Why Go: Come out for the festivities and support Dominican Hospital’s Team in Training team as they raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Join the exciting raffle or bowl a game, or two! 

Pricing: Teams of four can play for $80

Where/When: Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium, 307 Church St., Santa Cruz. Saturday, 6:30 p.m. 

Why Go: The 2011 season opener for the Santa Cruz Derby Girls is finally upon us. After another successful campaign a year ago, the SCDG will compete against the Nor Cal Roller Girls to kick off competition in the highly-competition Western Region of the nationally recognized Roller Derby League this weekend. Come out and grab a good seat to take in the fast-paced action in person. 

Pricing: $23 Adults, $10 Kids. 

Where/When: Brook Knoll Elementary School, 151 Brook Knoll Dr., Scotts Valley. Sunday, 3-5 p.m. 

Why Go: Brook Knoll PTA is hosting all kindergarten families to join the fun on Sunday for an ice-cream social at Brook Knoll's lower playground. This gathering is a perfect time for the kids and families to get to know each other and the school before the rapidly approaching big first day of school! 

Pricing: Free

Where/When: Santa Cruz Wharf, 15 Municipal Wharf. Sunday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. 

Why Go: Start your Sunday out right and head to the wharf to take in the Outrigger Canoe Races that begin at 9 a.m. Following the races, enjoy music from headliner Willie K and snack on lots of tasty Polynesian food items.

Where/When: Scotts Valley Community Center, 360 Kings Village Dr. Saturday, 9 a.m-1 p.m. 

Why Go: The weekly open-air market includes fresh organic fruit, vegetables, flowers, coffee and pastries, seafood, meat and eggs, showcasing the best in fresh-grown fruits and vegetables and local foods. Come out and shop and mingle with your fellow residents.
