Patch Picks: Favorite Picnic Spots

Summer is the perfect time for family picnics. And Scotts Valley and Santa Cruz County are abundant with prime picnic locations. Check out this week's favorite picks.

1. Loch Lomond Recreation Area, 100 Loch Lomond Way in Felton, offers picnic areas with tables, barbecues, water and restrooms. Take a hike along one of the area's designated hiking trails or go fishing and catch your lunch. The reservoir is stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill and channel catfish. Boats and supplies are available to rent. Check the website for any boating restrictions that may apply.

2. Skypark, 361 Kings Village Rd. in Scotts Valley, boasts 20,000 square feet of park space. There are barbecue pits, tennis courts and an open playground, all in the name of affordable family entertainment. Take your puppy along for the fun. Skypark also has a dog park, as well as a skate park for the kids. For more information and hours, call 831-438-1010.

3. Felton Covered Bridge State Park on Graham Hill Road at Mt. Hermon Road in Felton, is one of the few covered wooden bridges left in the state. Walk through the historic site, or just play and relax in one of the large grassy areas. Playground equipment and barbecue facilities are available, as well as public restrooms. Fishing is also allowed with proper licensing. To learn more, visit the website.

4. Picnic beach side at Seabright State Beach. Seabright is situated along the shore between the Santa Cruz Harbor and the Boardwalk. There are no barbecue pits, but fire rings are available, and there are plenty of restaurants surrounding. Grab your doggie and a doggie bag and hit the shore for an afternoon of fun. Dogs are permitted on the leash. For more information, call 831-685-6500.

5. Seacliff State Beach is on State Park Drive, just off Highway One in Aptos. Most known for the now defunct concrete ship, The Palo Alto, Seacliff is also a popular swimming spot. The pier is open for fishing, and there is a covered picnic facility with barbecue pits and picnic tables right along the shore. RV and tent camping are also available year round. For camping reservations or park information, call 831-685-6442 or visit parks.ca.gov/?page_id=543.
