Big Basin Vineyard—A Labor of Love

Syrah shines in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

What was once home to French winegrowers nearly 100 years ago is now home to some of the best syrah in Santa Cruz. In this week's , Patch's introduces us to the man behind Big Basin Vineyards and shows us how his vineyard's rich history is helping him put the Santa Cruz Mountains on the international map.

Winemaker Dinner at Parcel 104   May 20, 6:30 p.m.

This is a very special first Bay Area Big Basin Vineyards winemaker dinner. The dinner will be hosted in the Magnum Room at Parcel 104 and will feature a spectacular selection of Big Basin wines, including some sold out wines from the Big Basin library collection. Additionally, winemaker and proprietor Bradley Brown will give a multimedia presentation of the story behind Big Basin Vineyards and the history of the site. The dinner will feature the cuisine of Parcel 104 Executive Chef Jonathan Hall. Reservations can be made by calling Parcel 104 at 408-970-6104. The dinner is $120 per person (plus tax and gratuity) and will feature a reception and four courses paired with many of Big Basin's best wines.

The Menu
Reception: 2010 GSM Rosé paired with beef and apple fritter, Caromody cheese beignet with strawberry gastrique and gem heart and quail egg with sherry vinaigrette.
First Course: 2009 Estate Roussanne paired with butter poached lobster with asparagus and spring pea tapioca.
Second Course: 2008 Woodruff Family Vineyard Pinot Noir & 2008 Alfaro Family Vineyard Pinot Noir
paired with orange-scented barbecue quail with rhubarb and cherries, spring legumes.
Third Course: A four vintage Vertical of Rattlesnake Rock 2004-2007 paired with lamb two ways, braised shoulder and grilled sirloin, mustard spatzle.
Fourth Course: 2008 Booker Vineyard Grenache/Syrah paired with Valrohna lava cake, ganache croquette.

Santa Cruz Mountain Vintners' Festival

June 11-12

Big Basin will participate in the second weekend of Vintners' Festival when it comes to the east side of the Santa Cruz Mountains. On this weekend, participants will visit the Saratoga tasting room and taste the wine flight at no additional charge. The fee to participate in Vintners' Festival is $40, and you will be able to pick up your glass and ticket from the tasting room. There will also be a pate food pairing for an additional $6.95 and an optional reserve tasting flight at a special price of $8. Artwork by Matt Jones will be on display and available for sale.
