Backyard tomatoes, home-brewed beer and a tale of plastic bags—these are our suggestions to Get Out in and around Scotts Valley this weekend.

Where/When: Love Apple Farms, 2317 Vine Hill Rd., Santa Cruz. Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Why Go: An annual favorite at Love Apple Farms, this workshop is all about backyard tomato growing. Learn the latest techniques for fertilizing, pruning and soil amending for maximum production, health and taste. Also, explore the proper ways for staking, mulching, watering and more.

Why Go: Ever get in the mood for a cold one? Lots of times, certainly, but did you ever think you could learn to brew your own beer? Go to this special workshop and learn how to do it from Dave Bossie of Ben Lomond, a long-time home brewer and award-winning beer maker. Brew beer in class and when class is over, you get to taste it!

Why Go: You may never look at a plastic bag in exactly the same way. This is a special screening of the award-winning environmental documentary Bag It as "everyman" Jeb Berrier follows the plastic bag trail. The Santa Cruz Public Works Department will give a brief presentation following the film about plastic reduction and recycling.

Why Go: For the teens in your family, it's never too soon to think about the SAT college admission exams. And while thoughts may not be on school when summer is at its peak, this is a good opportunity to see what can be done to help your student get his or her best SAT scores. The session includes a one-hour practice exam and 9-minute to two-hour strategy workshop.

Where/When: , 209 Capitola Ave. (Esplanade Park). Sunday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m.

Why Go: Music and art at the beach, all together in one package. The "art gallery" will be open from 11 a.m.; live music on the Esplanade Stage will be from 2-4 p.m.
