Grab and Go Kids Planner: Forget About the Rain and Mudslides For A Day

There's a break in the weather, so take a break yourself, and look at Scott Valley Patch's suggestions for some things you can do not too far away, in this week's kids planner.

The mudslides and the constant rain may have gotten you and your kids slipping into a funk. So this just might be the time to take advantage of some of our suggestions for what you and your children can do to enjoy yourselves for a bit. Check out the Scotts Valley kids planner for this week and heading into next.

Where/When: , 118 Coral St. Santa Cruz, 6-9 p.m.

Why Go: This is an advance commemoration of National Record Day, coming up in two weeks. If you are wondering why you should take the kids, don't you think it's good for them to get an idea of how things used to be? The way you used to listen to music? Records? Vinyl? Friday night's event will have a display of old record covers, including some covers from days gone by in Santa Cruz. This could combine nicely with the free day at the museum, which we tell you about below.

Pricing: Free

Where/When: Mission and Emmett streets, Santa Cruz (Mission State Historical Park). Saturday, 1 p.m.

Why Go: Spend some time in a historical park and learn how to prepare some food and eat historically with a staple that we all know and love—tortillas. You and your child will learn how to make tortillas the old-school way, including hot rock cooking. Now that's a far cry from the microwave.

Pricing: Free

Where/When: The Hook, at the end of 41st Avenue, Santa Cruz. Saturday 8 a.m.-3 p.m.

Why Go: This is a fundraiser for the American Red Cross to help the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan and those who were impacted closer to home in and around Santa Cruz. It's an all-day event at The Hook, with raffles, games, food and more.

Pricing: Free (except what you donate)

Where/When: , 1156 High St., Santa Cruz. Tuesday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., to break up the week when the kids are home from school.

Why Go: OK, you can go this weekend and pay, if you like. But if you wait until Tuesday, it's Community Day at the arboretum, and it's free. With some of you have the kids home from school, wandering around the grounds of the arboretum (and perhaps packing a picnic lunch) can be a fun, family thing to do.

Pricing: Free

When/Where: Children's Discovery Museum, 180 Woz Way, San Jose. Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Why Go: We know it's a bit far, but as you read on, you have a chance at two events in one trip. Spend a delightful day at the museum with a special Vietnamese Community Celebration, Children of the Dragon. Members of the local Vietnamese community will be taking part in the event. Enjoy the music, dance and art—all highlighting Vietnamese culture.

Pricing: Museum admission, $10

When/Where: Children's Discovery Museum, 180 Woz Way, San Jose. Saturday, noon-3:15 p.m.

Why Go: If you head out Saturday, you can really make a day of it by combining the gardening with the Vietnamese culture celebration we just told you about. The kids' garden officially is back in business today.  The Kids' Garden is a real working garden and a place for kids to explore and learn about what grows.

Pricing: Museum admission, $10
