A Santa Cruz man was arrested Friday in connection with a sexual assault that occurred in the Whispering Pines area of Scotts Valley earlier in June, police said.

The female victim identified Jose Roberto Juarez Barranco, 29, as her attacker. She knew him previously, according to police.

The woman, who wasn't named, reported that around 10:30 p.m. on June 19, Barranco allegedly entered her studio and forcibly sexually assaulted her, police said.

The woman defended herself and the suspect left. She was able to provide a name, photo and vehicle description, police said.

Barranco was spotted in Scotts Valley on Oak Creek Boulevard Friday by the same officer who took the initial report and arrested. Both the victim and a witness later identified the suspect.

Barranco was arrested on suspicion of three felony sexual assault-related offenses and an additional felony, police said.
