Beloved Cafe Suddenly Shuts Down

The Heavenly Cafe has gone on to a better place.

Heavenly Cafe, a mainstay on Mount Hermon Road between Scotts Valley and Felton, abruptly closed its doors this month, the Press Banner reported Monday.

Heavenly shut its doors due to a "personal family matter," the newspaper quoted one of the co-owners as saying. He declined to elaborate.

The family-owned cafe began in 1955 in Felton. It moved to Scotts Valley in the mid-90s and the Rodriguez family purchased it seven years ago, the Press Banner reported

News of the cafe's demise generated chatter on its Facebook page — "Rumour has it you've shut the doors???" — as well as messages of condolence: "Sorry to hear you went out of buisness. :("

The cafe served breakfast and lunch

"For breakfast, our specialty is our house-made crab cakes egg benedicts and our Belgian waffles with fresh berries," Heavenly Cafe's Facebook page touted. "When lunchtime rolls around, be sure to order one of our delicious burgers or a grilled heavenly triple decker club sandwich which is filled with bacon, ham, turkey and cheddar cheese. Big juicy grilled steaks and Guinness beer-battered onion rings are also popular."

Patrons loved the portions and the friendly staff. Here is a review of Heavenly Cafe posted by reader David Shannon in 2011:
"The portions are generous and everything was delicious. The service by the young wait staff was excellent; they came by frequently to offer free refills of coffee. For years, I've been wanting for a good breakfast place in Scotts Valley. Now that I've discovered Heavenly Cafe, I'll go back there again and again!"

Patch reader Lucas McDaniel wrote: "Best breakfast place in Scotts Valley by far!"

The Press Banner reported that the family will retain the cafe's name and liquor license, but has no plans to reopen. Read the full Press Banner story here.
