Andrew Cavaletto worked at Scotts Valley Cycle Sport in high school. This weekend, the 28-year-old will celebrate the expansion of the Scotts Valley bike shop, which he took over three years ago.
"It's cool to see it evolve," said Cavaletto, standing in the bright new store at 203 Mount Hermon Rd. this week. "Things are going well. We're staying busy."
Strong sales and a desire to stock more items, including a broader range road cycling equipment and women's gear, spurred Cavaletto to move Cycle Sport from its former location just down Mount Hermon Road to the new spot, near Molly's Country Cafe.
The new store opened three weeks ago. Light and airy with lots of windows, it's a dramatically different experience than the old jam-packed shop.
"It's more shop-able," Cavaletto said.
The store features more for the road cyclist—a growing market for the shop once focused largely on mountain biking—and a whole section of women's cycling clothing. Scotts Valley Cycle Sport carries gear from Specialized, Santa Cruz Bicycles and Electra Bikes.
The shop is twice as big as the old location. That leave space for a dedicated area for bike fits (professional help to adjust your bike for optimum performance) and a larger service department.
Cavaletto will celebrate the new store from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. There will be a bike rodeo and costume contest for kids mid-day Saturday, live bands and catering by Bruno's Barbeque.
There also will be four social bike rides leaving from the shop this weekend. On Saturday, road cyclists can meet up at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. for 20-mile out-and-back rides. Sunday, there will be two mountain bike rides, also at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
