Get Creative, Get Crafty at Wix

In June, celebrated its one-year anniversary, making candle and soap crafting an easier to approach activity for kids and adults. But this is just the beginning for owner Laura Lemus’ hobby-turned-business.

“I was unemployed and looking for work, and I decided to do this,” Lemus said. “We’re looking to open a couple more locations soon.”

Lemus will continue to make a home in Scotts Valley, where her three children (10, 13 and 15) attend school while opening one or two more Wix stores.

“I love Scotts Valley. I wanted to open a shop where I live. It may be more of a challenge to run a small business here because it’s a small area, but I love Scotts Valley,” she said.

Lemus’ three children love Wix, too. It’s a fun place to experiment and play. Wix is a well-designed space offering equipment, supplies and instructions on making melt and pour soaps and paraffin wax candles. With an array of scents from essential oils and a rainbow of colors to choose from, Wix is an imaginarium. 

Wix is a good place for special occasions, like birthday and holiday parties or baby and wedding showers. Soap and candles make great gifts for any celebration. Wix helps organizations and individuals make soaps to sell for fundraisers.

“We’ve had people come in and make ribbon soaps, like for breast cancer awareness. We have ribbon soap molds. We had a girl’s soccer team come in and make 850 soaps which they wrapped and sold for a fundraiser,” Lemus said.

Field trips to wix can also be arranged.

Lemus said, “we have a field trip program where kids come in and do a candle and a soap and we do a history and science presentation, so it’s informational and educational."

Wix is also a great out of the ordinary date night, too.

“We have a lot of men and women or young couples that come in,” Lemus said. “They come in and make something together. It’s a fun activity to do before or after dinner, and it’s more interactive than a movie.”

“We get a lot of people who come in and say ‘I’m not creative,’ but everyone who makes something is surprised at how good their piece turns out. People are pleasantly surprised by how well everything comes out,” Lemus said.

A birthday party at Wix is a sure hit for kids as young as 5.

“Kids love having birthday parties here,” Lemus said. “They say, ‘This is the best birthday party I’ve ever been too.’ It’s so sweet. Kids love it because there’s no worry about the mess. They just go for it. And, adults get excited too.”

People can bring their own food and drinks and do a project as they mingle. Making candles and soaps at Wix is wholesome, clean fun.
