Hundreds Evacuated Along San Lorenzo River

Residents in 224 homes along the river must leave as it rises to higher than 18 feet.

Hundreds of residents along the San Lorenzo River are being evacuated as the river swells to higher than 18 feet, causing heavy flooding in the area.

About 825 people have been evacuated from about 224 homes since the Santa Cruz County Emergency Operations Center issued the alert just before 3 p.m. Thursday, county spokeswoman Melodye Serino said.

Although the rain has ceased and the river has stopped rising, the evacuation is still in effect, Serino said.
