Scotts Valley 'Storage Wars' Episode to Air Tuesday

Scotts Valley and Santa Cruz are featured on one of A&E's top-rated shows.

Santa Cruz has been getting a lot of screen time lately. “American Idol,” “The X-Factor,” “Restaurant Impossible,” and the Hollywood film “Of Men and Mavericks” have all filmed in the city recently. And now it’s time for Scotts Valley to get its 15 minutes.

On a stormy day in November, the cast and crew of A&E’s top show, “Storage Wars,” descended on Scotts Valley. The show, which follows “teams of bidders looking to score it big in the high stakes world of storage auctions” hit up an auction at The Storage Depot on Mt. Hermon Road.

In the “Blame it on the Rain” episode, bidders will vie for several storage units at the Scotts Valley facility. The bidding wars are always exciting to watch, but even more exciting is seeing what kind of treasures are uncovered in the units.

In one of the Scotts Valley units, one of the show’s stars, Darrell Sheets, finds three surfboards. To get them appraised, Sheets and the crew gave the Santa Cruz Surfing Museum a call.

“They knew of the museum and figured that this would be a great way to value the boards’ worth,” said Howard McGhee, a member of the Santa Cruz Surf Club Preservation Society.

McGhee said that he and longtime Santa Cruz surfer, Harry Mayo, 88, were interviewed at the museum for the show.

“They came in with the boards and they filmed in the museum,” McGhee said. “They really wanted to learn the history of surfing in the area.”

McGhee said that two of the boards they brought in were short boards that  “were nothing really special.” The third board was a higher-end pro board that had sponsor logos on it. Though he can’t know for sure, McGhee speculates that the board could have belonged to a local pro surfer.

“There has been so much focus on Santa Cruz in the last year,” McGhee said. “It’s a unique place, and this just adds to the flavor of Santa Cruz as a surfing destination.”

The Scotts Valley ‘Storage Wars’ episode airs Tuesday at 10 p.m. on A&E.
