Vehicle Catches Fire Near Highway 17 South of Scotts Valley

A vehicle caught fire Wednesday afternoon and spread to vegetation near Highway 17 south of Scotts Valley, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Whoever was in the vehicle got out safely and there were no injuries, a CHP dispatcher in Santa Cruz said in a phone interview.

The fire was reported at 1:58 p.m. May 22 near La Madrona Drive and Sims Road, just west of the 17, according to the CHP.

Callers told the CHP the vehicle was on fire, fully engulfed, and flames were spreading to grass next to the road, as of 2:01 p.m.

At 2:05 p.m., four Cal Fire engine crews were reported en route, according to the CHP. The fire was reported nearly out by 2:12 p.m.

A closure for cleanup was expected at La Madrona and Sims, and on La Madrona near a bridge, according to the CHP. A sweeper vehicle was en route to assist with cleanup as of 2:52 p.m.

El Rancho was also closed from Sims to La Madrona, a CHP dispatcher said.

Details of what caused the fire were not immediately available.
