Women in Business

Women in Business — Inspiration, Ideas and Resources!

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been interested in reading the stories of women who have started their own businesses. I became even more interested about 4 years ago when my first child was born, and I had some spare time. Yes, I said spare time. I got lucky and delivered a good sleeper. During his naps (up to 4 hours at a time), this girl who had been working since age 15, got a bit antsy and wanted to start a business as well.

I began by researching women who had started their own businesses. I came across Sandra Wilson, who invented Robeez shoes, and also Susan Brown, who invented the Boppy pillow. Robeez are the cutest little shoes for babies, and the Boppy pillow is another must-have for new moms to assist in breast feeding or propping up their baby.

These products were both created by mothers out of a need for their own babies. In 2007, Robeez was acquired by Striderite, a large shoe manufacturer. In 2008, Boppy became a part of the Artsana Group, a global leader in children's products.

Feeling inspired, I was ready to start my own. For years, I had made baby blankets and baby burp cloths for friends as gifts. I knew that was what I wanted to focus on. After all, that was a real need of mine, since I was starting my own family. Soon after, the bundle shop was born.

It all starts from a need—what's yours?

One of the resources I found very useful was guru.com. Here you have access to over 250,000 freelancers around the world. You can post a project (I requested logo design), and before the day was over, I had 30 people from all over the world contacting me to design my logo. Guru is an amazing resource for people who need help with elements of starting a business and taking existing businesses to a new level.

Another great resource is bludomain.com website templates. A local Scotts Valley photographer, Jessica Hoff of Giggle Bean Photography, told me about bludomain. I had already gone through the initial process of launching my website with a web designer, but after I found bludomain, I completely re-launched my website. The website templates are really easy, and if you have a little patience, you can do everything yourself to launch a website! Love that!

What are you waiting for—get going!
