An "A" ranking for safety: Kaiser's 2 Silicon Valley Hospitals honored

National Leapfrog Rankings for Safety Announced; 20 NCAL KP Hospitals get top score including KP Santa Clara and KP San Jose Medical Centers

Kaiser Permanente’s hospitals in Santa Clara and San Jose received top-ranked “A” scores from the national Leapfrog organization, in recognition of their limiting patient injuries, reducing medical errors, and preventing infections. In all, 20 Northern California Kaiser Permanente hospitals were ranked “A” by the Leapfrog Group, which examined and graded 2,500 hospitals throughout the United States.

“This is honor reflects our focus on putting the patient first in everything we do at Kaiser Permanente,” said Dr. Susan Smarr, Physician-in-Chief of the Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara Medical Center. “Kaiser Permanente’s doctors, nurses, and staff all work hard to ensure safety, personalized care, and high quality.”

The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits, released its Hospital Safety Scores after examining publicly available data on patient injuries, medical and medication errors and infections at U.S.  hospitals, which were then assigned A, B, C, D, or F grades for their safety records.

Dr. Raj Bhandari, Physician-in-Chief of the Kaiser Permanente San Jose Medical Center, said the Leapfrog Group score is a further indication of Kaiser Permanente’s excellence. “We’ve won a  5-star award from the Center for Medicare Services, a  top-ranking from the state’s Office of the Patient Advocate, and the National Committee for Quality Assurance.”
