Kaiser Permanente Silicon Valley MDs, RNs, bring aid to typhoon-hit Philippines

First Photos Show Kaiser Permanente Caregivers at work

A first group of photos from the typhoon-devastated Philippines shows Kaiser Permanente doctors and nurses working to help the victims of the storm and other medical needs. The team includes Dr. Dana Weisshaar, Cardiology, Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara and a resident of Los Gatos, Nurse Chris Gonzales, Emergency Department at Kaiser Permanente San Jose, and a resident of San Jose, and Dr. Nina Chicharoen, Emergency Department, Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara.

A large team of Kaiser Permanente Physicians and Nurses deployed to the area devastated by Typhoon Haiyan in November. The early days of their work included treating some of the estimated 12,000 people injured in the storm. As time goes on, they are filling in for Philippine medical workers who are taking time to rebuild homes and be with families.

The doctors and nurses from the Silicon Valley are delivering babies, repairing festering wounds, treated virus- and bacterial-caused illnesses, and patching up injured construction workers, sent to rebuild the towns.

Kaiser Permanente is working at two medical sites: a damaged hospital in the town of Carigara, and 35 miles to the west, a clinic in a school in the capital city of Tacloban, which was devastated by the storm. The photos were taken by Bob Durand, a Kaiser Permanente emergency planner.
