Getting Over the Back-to-School Bumps

The start of the school year is an exciting—but stressful—time for kids, as well as moms and dads. At Scotts Valley Unified, that time is next week as school is back in session Aug. 29

Parents, one of the best things you can do to support your child's learning is familiarizing yourself with the important people at school.

Knowing the key players on campus can help improve communication, clear up misunderstandings and help parents get a better feel for how their children are doing in school. 

So who are those essential people? Think principal, classroom teacher, secretary and parents of other students. 

But how do you make that face-to-face connection? Maybe you work long hours or someone else in the family drops the kids off at school so you're just not on campus. You can meet school staff and other parents in-person at Back-to-School Night events at all four of the Scotts Valley Unified School District elementary schools.

Be sure to collect phone numbers, email addresses and names (it could be embarrassing to only know someone as "Isabel's mom").

There are several events in the first two weeks of school to meet and mingle with teachers, school staff and other parents. Find your child's school here and put those important events on the calendar:

SVUSD Back-to-School Burger Bash for students, parents and faculty of all schools. Aug. 26, Macdorsa Park, 12:30-3:30 p.m.

Brook Knoll Elementary School:

Kindergarten Ice Cream Social - Aug. 26, 3-5 p.m., Lower Playground

Teacher Meet and Greet, Aug. 28, 10:30-11 a.m. Kindergarten; 11-11:30 a.m. Kindergarten; 10:30-11:30 first-fifth grades.

Back-to-School Night, Sept. 5, 6:30-8 p.m.

Vine Hill Elementary School:

Teacher Meet and Greet, Aug. 28, 10:30-11:30 a.m.

Back-to-School Night, Sept. 6, 6:30-8 p.m.

Scotts Valley Middle School:

Back-to-School Night, Sept. 13, 6:30-8 p.m.
