Scotts Valley Goes Purple for Cancer Awareness

Annual Relay for Life event will take place over the weekend.

The streets, sidewalks and storefronts of Scotts Valley were dotted with purple balloons and streamers on Wednesday to raise awareness for cancer.

On May 19, the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life will take place in Skypark. Wednesday’s “Paint the Town Purple” day was in support of the event and to get the word out about the cause.

Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society’s largest event and more than three million people participate around the world.

During the 24-hour, team relay event, teams continually walk around a track in support and celebration of cancer survivors and in memory of those claimed by the disease. The event also includes games, activities, entertainment and a special luminaria ceremony after dark where bags with candles will be lit in honor of loved ones who have been affected by cancer.

This year’s Scotts Valley Relay for Life currently has 222 participants and 27 teams signed up, and has already raised $35,787 for cancer research.
