Barbecue Raises $140,000 for Family of Bryan Stow

Pizza My Heart contributes $20,000, and Malone's will also host a fundraiser.

People and communities everywhere are coming together to help the family of paramedic Bryan Stow, who was severely beaten outside of Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles last week.

On Wednesday, a barbecue fundraiser in San Jose hosted by Stow's employer, American Medical Response, raised $140,000 to pay for his medical expenses.

The company hosted the barbecue at its headquarters, and the money raised will go toward helping Stow's family pay his medical bills, said Martine Bustamente, a volunteer coordinator for the event and a colleague of Stow's.

Gil Glass, an event organizer and general manager at AMR, said the event drew roughly 3,000-4,000 people, far exceeding his expectations.

"It was just an amazing outpouring from the community to come out and support Bryan and his family," Glass said. "Everyone was just incredibly blown away by the show of support."

The money was raised through the sale of food and auctioning of items, which included autographed memorabilia donated by the San Jose Sharks and San Francisco Giants.

Pizza My Heart, which was founded in Capitola, also held a fundraiser on Tuesday at all of its restaurants across the Bay Area. The pizza place donated a portion of the day's sales to anyone who went in and mentioned Stow's name, raising $20,000.

In Scotts Valley, Malone's Grille will host a fundraiser for Stow, who was a regular customer, on Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. The restaurant will donate 30 percent of its food and beverage sales during that time to Stow's family. The event will also include a silent auction and a raffle.
