With Rain, Fire Season Ends

CALFIRE says the danger of wildland blazes will pass by Monday.

Monday marks the end of Cal Fire San Mateo-Santa Cruz unit's 2011 fire season.

The fire unit has declared Monday the end to the season and will reduce seasonal staffing, officials said.

The unit responded to 724 wildland and other fires within the two counties during the 2011 season. All of the fires were kept to less than 10 acres, according to officials.

Cal Fire will continue to staff engines in both counties during the upcoming rainy season.

Unit Chief John Ferreira advised all resident to maintain at least 100 feet of defensible space around their homes as winds can quickly dry fuels and increase fire danger even in winter months.
