Erratic Highway 17 Driver Suffered From Low Blood Sugar Before Crash

CHP said the woman was perceived to be drunk before she crashed into the center divide.

A woman who failed to pull over on southbound Highway 17 this morning after the California Highway Patrol suspected her of driving drunk was actually suffering from low blood sugar, a CHP officer said.

The woman was first spotted on Highway 17 at Lark Avenue in Los Gatos before 11 a.m. as she struck the center divide, which prompted the CHP to try to stop her, CHP Officer D.J. Sarabia said.

The driver did not yield to the CHP and continued driving south for about 4 miles traveling at about 40 mph and hit the center divide four more times before she stopped just south of Bear Creek Road, Sarabia said.

Emergency crews responded and told the CHP the woman was suffering from low blood sugar and was possibly diabetic, Sarabia said. She was taken to the hospital.

She did not suffer any injuries in the crash, Sarabia said.

Sarabia said she was not evading officers and had not made any maneuvers to get away. He added that driving behavior from a diabetic episode can be perceived as drunken driving.
