Eshoo Looking for High School Artists

The congresswoman is holding an art contest for students and the winner's work will be displayed at the nation's Capitol.

Congresswoman Anna Eshoo is inviting local high school students to participate in the 2012 Congressional Art Competition, An Artistic Discovery.

Each spring, Eshoo, who represents the 14th Congressional District, which includes Scotts Valley, holds a district-wide art competition for high school students. A panel of local artists will choose the winner, whose work will be displayed in the corridors of the nation’s Capitol, on view for thousands of visitors.

The first-place winner will receive two roundtrip tickets to Washington, D.C. to join students from across the country to be honored at a reception in mid-June. First place winners will also be given the opportunity to enroll at Savannah College of Arts and Design and may be eligible to receive an artistic scholarship of at least $3,000, if they meet or exceed admission requirements.

“The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for Members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, over 650,000 high school students have participated in the nation-wide competition,” a press release from Eshoo’s office said.

High school artists who wish to apply should submit their original work to Eshoo’s District Office at 698 Emerson St., Palo Alto by Friday, April 6, before 5:30 p.m. For more information or to read the contest guidelines, visit www.eshoo.house.gov, or call (650) 323-2984, (408) 245-2339 or (831) 335-2020.
