Varsity Falcons dominate the Knights 18 to 1.

~By Gary Hickey

On Tuesday, the Scotts Valley Falcon varsity lacrosse team hosted a league game against the Soquel Knights. This was the second meeting of the season and the Falcons couldn't wait to get on the scoreboard.

A little over a minute into the game the offense kicked into gear with midfielder Jake Rehnberg driving to the goal then feeding attackman Spencer Fogelquist for his first goal. Within seconds Fogelquist had his second goal off a fast break feed from midfielder Wesley Koenig. Thirty seconds later another fast break by midfielder Brady Bothkin who found Collin Corbella for his first shot and goal. Three minutes later the Falcons unleashed another barrage of goals.

Alexis Pineda started the action by feeding Corbella for a goal, then Jake Rehnberg broke through the defense and found the back of the net. His unassisted goal inspired Corbella to get one of his own. Then midfielder Bradley McClarnon wanted in on the action and blew by his defender for a goal. The high flying Falcons were on a roll. With a little over a minute left in the first quarter Scotts Valley sniped in three more goals in 20 seconds.

Collin Corbella became the playmaker, finding midfielder Alexis Pineda who buried his shot, then playmaker Koenig won the face off and fed Fogelquist for a quick one. Koenig was not done though, he won the next face off and took it to the goal and fired a beautiful high bounce shot into the top of the goal. The first quarter ended with Scotts Valley on top 10-0.

The second quarter started out with two quick goals. Rehnberg went unassisted and Koenig drew the defense to him and dumped a feed over to Corbella who scored. The pace slowed down for the rest of the quarter. The only other goal was scored by Soquel's Zach Anderson. It was 12-1 at the half.

The third quarter was dominated by the Falcons and their three high scorers. First it was Koenig from Fogelquist, then Fogelquist from Koenig. Corbella got two and Koenig closed out the quarter.

The fourth quarter saw Falcon attackman Joe Locke score on a nicely placed shot. The final score was 18-1.

Scotts Valley controlled the entire game, the speed of the Falcons was unmatched by the Knights. The offensive output was pretty impressive. Collin Corbella had six goals and two assists, Spencer Fogelquist had four goals and one assist, Wesley Koenig had three goals and five assists, Jake Rehnberg had two goals, Alexis Pineda had one goal and one assist, Bradley McClarnon and Joe Locke each had one goal. The defense turned back many threats by intercepting passes and scooping up ground balls. Cole Deblock led the effort with five ground balls. The Knights did take their shots, but goalies Chris Martin and Greg Kohler stopped all but one, each making four saves.

Scotts Valley now has a 12-1 record in varsity lacrosse. They face league rival Aptos on Friday, April 27, in a fight for first place at Scotts Valley High School at 3:30 p.m.. This will be the real test for the Falcons.
