Get Out: Your Guide to the Weekend

Watch the talents or athletic abilities of SVHS students, take a hike or sing some karaoke this weekend.

Where/When: , 555 Glenwood Dr. Thursday, 6:30 p.m.

What: Scotts Valley High School is hosting its annual, school-wide talent show. It is free and open to the public, and will feature an acappella group, bands, singers and individual and group acts, all vying for prizes and recognition of their tremendous talents. A bake sale and drinks will be available for purchase, with proceeds going to SVHS Student Government, which is sponsoring the talent show.

Price: Admission is free.

Where/When: , 360 Kings Village Rd. Thursday, 7 p.m.

What: eighth-grade students will perform 1776: The Drama, a reenactment of the Second Continental Congress. Under the guidance of the Scotts Valley Performing Arts Association, the students have been working for weeks on the piece in which they will take on the roles of characters such as John Adams, John Hancock, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and George Washington as they debate whether to become independent from Great Britain.

Falcon Lacrosse

Where/When: Aptos High School, 100 Mariner Way, Aptos. Friday, 7 p.m.

What: The varsity lacrosse team is on fire at the moment. They are currently undefeated so Friday night’s game against rival Aptos should be an exciting one, especially since Aptos is the only team the Falcons lost to last year in the 2011 Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League Tournament final. If you are into great competition, make the drive to Aptos for this game.

Price: Free

Where/When: City of Scotts Valley Community Center, 360 Kings Village Rd. Saturday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. 

Why Go: The weekly open-air market includes fresh organic fruit, vegetables, flowers, coffee and pastries, seafood, meat and eggs, showcasing the best in fresh-grown fruits and vegetables and local foods. Come out and shop and mingle with your fellow residents.

Where/When: , 4402 Scotts Valley Dr. Saturday, 9 p.m.

What: Are you looking to release your inner rock star? Well, head to Malone’s ever Saturday night and belt out your favorite tune. The bar hosts Karaoke with Ken every week with a large variety of songs to choose from. Hear some tunes and scout out the local talent at this fun event.

Price: There is no cover charge, and food and drinks are available at various prices.

Docent-Led Cathedral Redwoods Hike

Where/When: Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, 101 North Big Trees Park Rd., Felton. Sunday, noon-2:30 p.m.

What: Docent Joel Hill will lead this hike that takes participants through lush ferns, dense forest, and over bridges over several streams to the Cathedral Redwoods area on the ridge above a river. This moderate hike is approximately 4 miles long and should take about 2 1/2 hours. Those wishing to participate should meet at the park’s visitor center and bring water and snacks.
