Students Learn Bike Safety From the Pros

Vine Hill Elementary and Scotts Valley Middle schools get a visit from professional cyclist Jen Reither.

The Scotts Valley Grand Prix is almost here and in a lead up to the big event, students at Scotts Valley Middle School and Vine Hill Elementary School got a lesson in bicycle safety from a pro.

On Monday, professional cyclist and Scotts Valley resident Jennifer Reither, who races for Vanderkitten-Focus, stopped by the schools to make sure the students were aware of the importance of wearing helmets and being safe on their bikes.

“I know you guys are all super cool and safe,” Reither said. “But sometimes it’s the other people you have to worry about.”

Reither, who in her 14 years of racing has had two concussions, been hit by a car, had dozens of other accidents and broken three helmets, discussed her past experiences with the students to really illustrate why helmets are a must.

“The last time I broke a helmet, I was riding my mountain bike and I hit a small rock and my bike just jackknifed,” she said, adding that she split her helmet. “You just never know when something like that might happen. Just get something on your head.”

Reither also talked to the students about her sport and encouraged them to start riding their bikes more.

“There are kids your age who are racing now,” she said. “So get on your bikes and get started now.”

The Scotts Valley Grand Prix is on May 15 from 1 to 9 p.m. The kid’s zone, 180 El Pueblo Dr., is open from 3:30-7 p.m. Volunteers are still needed for the day of the event. For more information, visit scottsvalleygrandprix.com.
