Tyler Marshall Named Youth of the Year

The SVHS senior athlete and scholar is being honored by the Chamber for his work in the community.

Tyler Marshall doesn’t shy away from anything. The Scotts Valley High School senior is a three-sport varsity athlete, playing basketball, golf and football for the past four years. He served as captain of the golf team in 2009 and is a captain of this year’s football team. He has also been active in student government for the past four years, where he served as the ASB Rally Officer, and he maintains a 4.2 GPA.

While that is a lot to keep anyone busy, Tyler also finds the time to give back to his community, something he says he would encourage all of his peers to do.

“It’s important in a community like Scotts Valley. It’s a small town and it makes a difference,” he said. “Growing up here has given me so many opportunities to get involved and give back.”

Along with his athletic and academic accomplishments, Tyler has also volunteered as an umpire in the Scotts Valley youth sports leagues for five years and has logged over 200 hours in the Dominican Hospital Junior Volunteer Program, something he hopes will prepare him for the career path he hopes to follow—becoming a doctor and officer through the Naval ROTC program.

“I try to do things that interest me, and if I can give back too, that’s great,” Tyler said. “It’s nice to get recognition but that’s not why I do it.”

But people have noticed all he does, and Tyler is being recognized for his commitment to the community and for being an outstanding role model to his peers. He has been named the Chamber of Commerce’s Sharemi Ullestad Memorial Youth of the Year and will receive an award Saturday night at the Community Awards Gala in Scotts Valley.

The award is named after Sharemi Ullestad, a longtime, dedicated volunteer in Scotts Valley who died in 2009 at 28. Sharemi, who is also the daughter of Chamber executive director Sharolynn Ullestad, was Scotts Valley’s first Youth of the Year in 1998. She worked tirelessly in the community to help put on, among other things, the Scotts Valley Art and Wine Festival, the Chamber’s Christmas tree lighting ceremony and the annual awards dinner.

Though Tyler said he never knew Sharemi personally, just knowing that he is following in the footsteps of someone that he has heard so many positive and inspiring things about makes the award even more special.

“I’m really honored to be categorized with someone as high a caliber as her,” Tyler said. “It just really is an honor.”

The Scotts Valley Chamber’s Community Service Awards Gala takes place Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. at the Hilton Santa Cruz/Scotts Valley. Tickets are $75 and can be purchased through the Scotts Valley Chamber of Commerce by calling 831-438-1010 or online at the Chamber website, www.scottsvalleychamber.com
