Vine Hill Elementary Student Newspaper–First Edition

Vine Hill fifth-graders put out student newspaper, The Bear Clause.

Vine Hill Elementary School students are getting a real-world lesson in journalism as they create their own newspaper, The Bear Clause, for the student body.

The group of fifth-graders work on the paper in their free time as a part of the school’s newly launched journalism club under the guidance of teacher Jane Hoffman. The students discuss story ideas with each other and Hoffman to come up with things that will appeal to the entire student body and the parents.

Since school began, the students have been busy interviewing people for their stories and writing away for the first issue of The Bear Clause.

Yellow Jackets

Have you been having trouble with yellow jackets at school lately? Well, we’re here to help! Yellow jackets usually come out during the end of a warm season. They hibernate in the cold seasons so don’t be alarmed when they suddenly disappear.

Yellow jackets usually bother people with sugary foods, meat products and fruits. If you don’t want to be stung try not to wear bright colors, scented hair spray, or suntan lotion. Try bringing a laundry dryer sheet to help keep the yellow jackets away. Never ever squish or swat yellow jackets, because it releases a chemical alarm that signals other wasps and yellow jackets in the area to attack. If you are stung, wash it immediately.

Yellow jackets are often called the “meat bee.” Yellow jackets make their nests out of fibers scraped from wood mixed from saliva. Their nests have a single entry hole, so bigger predators can’t get inside of the nests. Their nests can be bigger than a basketball! So, if you see any nests like these, be sure to be aware. We hope this helps you with your yellow jacket problem.

Sports–Scotts Valley vs. East Hills

By Sebastian P.

It was an amazing game between Scotts Valley and East Hills on Oct. 1 at Scotts Valley High School. It was cool when number 7, Garrett F., threw a touchdown pass to number 27, Joe M. Also number 3, Ryan J., made two amazing catches.

Some pretty good things happened, like when number 57, David C., blocked two field goals. Then, Scotts Valley recovered the ball, and my favorite part was when number 81, Philip G., had a 20-yard interception run. But in the end, we lost to East Hills. It was Scotts Valley Falcons 8 and East Hills Wolf Pack 34.

Interview of the Week

By Everett T., Tyler E., Aidan L., Canyon J., Derryn S.

Mrs. Stewart, Vine Hill principal, answered a few questions for us.

Aidan: What are some of the problems on the playground?

Mrs. Stewart: Some of the issues are bullying.  People aren’t freezing when the bell rings, people not cleaning up after themselves at the lunch tables, the noise level at the lunch tables and also the noise level on the playground is way too high. People are not putting their trash in the trashcans. People need to pay more attention to the Earth and people are screaming at the top of their lungs on the playground.

Tyler: What are some of the solutions to our problems?

Mrs. Stewart: Some of the solutions might be to focus a little bit more on kindness by having more Kindness Assemblies, and the new counselor will also help stop bullying.

Tyler: What can we do to improve the school?

Mrs. Stewart: Some of the things you can do to improve the school is to clean up after yourself and just be kind to one another.

Tyler: What would you like to have in the school?

Mrs. Stewart: I would like to have a Spirit Day Committee that would set up the school spirit days.
