Scotts Valley World Disc Golf Champ Prepares to go on Tour

Local disc golfer Jon Baldwin is the one to beat on the pro disc golf tour.

On the first hole of sudden death Jon Baldwin of Scotts Valley took down his first “Steady Ed” Masters Cup victory in the masters division Sunday. This summer he is going on the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) National Tour and said only two weekends will be tournament free before he goes back to college.

Baldwin is currently the masters world champion and said he has never toured this hard, but is looking forward to the experience.

“I'll be on the road for the better part of two months ... it'll be interesting to see [how it affects my game,” Baldwin said.

Baldwin battled with San Franciscan Patrick Brown throughout the three day “Steady Ed” tournament in Santa Cruz. After day one Baldwin was 4 strokes back, but clawed back to a two stroke lead by the end of play Saturday. That evaporated when Baldwin picked up a double bogey on hole 18.

They remained tied through most of the back nine on the 27-hole course. Both players went out of bounds on 27 (“top of the world”) and it came down to Brown missing a 15-foot putt in the playoff.

“It was a bit nerve racking, not a relaxing stroll to victory,” Baldwin said. "Patrick has amazing skills and can throw shots I can't even map out.”

Baldwin humbly added, “He just missed a short putt. This year, it's not like I won it. I just happened to be there.” However, the video to the right shows it takes skills to be tied for the lead after 81 holes at Delaveaga.
