Little League Roundup

Cardinals, Giants win openers

The Scotts Valley Little League Majors Division started play Saturday, March 12 and will be joined this weekend by the AAA Division, which has been playing exhibition games since Opening Day ceremonies March 5.

Cardinals 7, Rangers 3

Despite falling behind 3-0 in the top of the first, the Redbirds rallied for a 7-3 victory behind scoreless pitching from Logan Hudson and Gregory Neiger, who together struck out 11 batters in five innings of work.  Neiger was 3-for-3 with a double and homer, Nic Alvarez was 2-for-2 and Georgia Parsons doubled. The Rangers got hits from Jonathan Steen, who doubled, and Travis Lane and Connor Santos.

Giants 9, Rays 5

The Giants got strong hitting from Seth O'Brien, who doubled and drove in two runs, and hits from Mitchell Gaspar, Carson Spence, Cooper Rains and Nathan Pisciotta. Owen Rockow reached base four times on three walks and a hit-by-pitch. Starting pitcher Gaspar struck out the side in his two innings of work and allowed no runs. Jake Utic had three hits for the Rays and pitched two scoreless innings while teammate Jack Kastner pitched two scoreless innings before bunting for a hit, stealing two bases and scoring on a passed ball to plate the game’s first run.
