Santa Cruz Mountains Challenge Rolls Out Saturday

There's still time to register for the annual century bike ride Saturday in Scotts Valley.

The annual Santa Cruz Mountains Challenge, a punishing ride in the hills above Scotts Valley, will roll out from Scotts Valley High School at dawn Saturday.

The ride includes a double century (that's 200 miles), a century (100 miles) and a metric century (100 kilometers or 65 miles). All of the courses include a grueling 1,500-foot, 3-mile climb up the Jamison Creek Hill.

Motorists, watch out for a surge in cyclists Saturday all over the mountains. The courses travel along Mt. Charley Road and Summit Road, dip down to Lexington Reservoir in Los Gatos and head over toward Bonny Doon on China Grade and Smith Grade.

This is the 15th year of the race. Online registration is open through Wednesday.
