Scotts Valley Sports Teams Gear Up for Summer

Schools wind down, local teams ramp up.

Once the weather finally starts to feel like summer (seriously, heavy rain in May and June?) there are youth sports teams gearing up for competition.

The Rangers will represent Scotts Valley Little League in the District 39 Majors Tournament of Champions (TOC) with their first game on June 12 at 3 p.m. at the Live Oak Field in Santa Cruz.

Ten teams from local Little Leagues within District 39 will play in the weeklong tournament.

Trouble is the fast pitch softball league for girls. The league has five age divisions–U16 A and B, U12, U10 and U–and has started practicing and preparing for competitive tournaments during the summer months.

PAL Football and Cheer will begin the season on July 23, with registration now open for football and cheerleading.  The 2011 season will have four divisions of football and cheer teams, Jr. Pee Wee, Pee Wee, Jr. Midget and Midget.  The program is headed up by a group of well-respected coaches with plenty of openings for kids of all ages.

Mike Bradley has been involved with the SVAA Falcon football and cheer league for five years when his son Mikey started playing at the age of 9.

“This is a safe and fun environment for kids to learn the game of football,” Bradley said. "It’s a family affair year after year."

For individual pursuits, you may try skateboarding at the Skypark Skateboard Park. Skateboarding is considered an extreme sport with the only person that you have to compete against is yourself.

Cheyne Pearson thinks the skate park in Scotts Valley is the best in the area.

"It’s a lot of fun, I've been coming here for 5 years,” Pearson said.

Middle schooler Tanner S. said he is looking forward to learning new tricks and being with friends at the skate park over the summer.

“This is a cool sport and something to do when school is out,” Tanner said.
