SV Middle School Athletes Start Fall Sports Season

Soccer, cross-country and basketball teams are already on the move.

Amid the constantly changing school happenings, one thing has remained consistent over the years: the thriving athletic program at Scotts Valley Middle School.

Athletics are an important part of student life at Scotts Valley Middle School. They offer everyone a chance to get involved, improve their skills, experience competition and decide whether to pursue the activity in the future. For some students, sporting opportunities offered through middle school athletics are the first time they have participated in organized sports.

Scotts Valley Middle School has a history of success, and the coaches are once again optimistic about this year’s teams. The programs do not focus on win-loss records, but rather on teaching good attitudes, fair play and good sportsmanship.

Boys Soccer: The team is undefeated with two wins and two ties. The team has shown a lot of teamwork on the field with fast dribbling, accurate passing, a strong defense and incredible goalie saves.

Cross Country: Coach Jeremy Ball is upbeat and optimistic about the runners on the team. “We have close to 45 runners this season," said Ball. “They’re doing great so far.”

Girls Basketball: The three teams started off playing strong against SLV middle school this week. The seventh- and eighth-grade teams both posted wins while the sixth-grade team gave a great effort but came up short.

On Wednesday, all three teams showed their dribbling and passing skills on the court against Shoreline Middle School Sharks. All three teams were on the winning end and played really well together.

There is something special about participating in sports and representing your school.

The 2011 fall teams display enthusiasm and energy when competing against neighboring schools.

It’s all about a sense of pride, mixed with a level of excitement that makes everyone proud to be Dolphins.

Alma Black is the new athletic director for Scotts Valley Middle School. She has a passion for sports and remembers supporting her own children who played sports at Scotts Valley Middle School.

“I’m having a great time and I love watching kids do the things that they love," said Black.

Black will show her support for SVMS athletics by volunteering on Friday at the middle school dance—offering temporary sport tattoos to support the SVMS athletic department.

The first dance of the school year will be a sports theme, Kick Off Sports Dance.
