Falcon Lacrosse Team Outscores SLV 13-3

The 14-1 team has one regular season game left before heading into playoffs.

~By Gary Hickey

On Tuesday, the Scotts Valley Falcons varsity lacrosse team hosted a league game against the San Lorenzo Valley Cougars. The first quarter started out with a lot of shots but only one goal was scored. Falcon Jake Rehnberg drove by his man for an unassisted goal. Cougars' goalie Will Burke was up to the task stopping many of the Falcon shots.

The scoring picked up in the second quarter when the Falcons started to move the ball better. First Griffin Curtiss scored an unassisted goal, then Bradley McClarnon found Wesley Koenig for a score. The SLV defense was clogging up the center of the field, forcing a lot of outside shots. Then a few minutes later Koenig looked inside and fed Spencer Fogelquist for an in-close shot and goal. A minute after that, midfielder Nathanael Schwab picked up a ground ball, ran to the goal, drew the defense and fed Collin Corbella who scored his first goal.

The half ended with Scotts Valley up 5-0. The Falcons took 23 shots but only scored five goals, too many shots from the outside. Scotts Valley needed to feed the inside to get higher percentage shots.

In the third quarter, the Falcons started to find their grove. As the SLV defense was concentrating on shutting down the top middies, the Falcons went inside to attackman Spencer Fogelquist for four consecutive goals. First Griffin Curtiss found him, then in 9 seconds, Wesley Koenig won the faceoff and ran the fast break finding Fogelquist. The Falcons were feeding the crease from all sides. Lefty Corbella fed him twice in 2 minutes, both for goals. Then Fogelquist switched from scorer to feeder and found a cutting Nathanael Schwab who shot and scored. The Cougars finally got on the board when midfielder Robbie Biagiotti scored on an unassisted drive. The third quarter ended 10-1.

Biagiotti did it again to start the fourth. Then the  Cougars attackman Alex Muchamuel fired in a high speed shot, making it 10-3, but that didn't last long. Fogelquist found Corbella for another goal. Then Fogelquist took his man for a run and fired in a rocket of his own. He assisted in the final goal of the game when he found an open Griffin Curtiss who got his second goal.

The game ended 13-3, Scotts Valley.

The second half saw 17 Falcon shots and eight goals, much better percentage than the first half. The SLV goalie Will Burke played great and had 21 saves. Scotts Valley had 27 ground balls, SLV had 11. Scotts Valley won 13 faceoffs, SLV won six.

The Falcon defense was anchored by Cole Deblock, Scott Hunter and Spencer Rollins. Deblock picked up six ground balls and helped shut down the Cougar offense. Falcon goalie Chris Martin had nine saves on the day. Spencer Fogelquist led the Falcon scoring with six goals and three assists, followed by Collin Corbella with two goals and two assists. Griffin Curtiss had two goals and one assist, Wesley Koenig had one goal, two assists and five ground balls, Nathanael Schwab had one goal, one assist and six ground balls and Jake Rehnberg had a goal. SLV scoring saw Robbie Biagiotti with two goals and Alex Muchamuel with a goal.
