Sounds…Read More like they had him cold on the two rapes and didn't want the hassle or bad press the prosecution would have given the Army! Well what kind of press is the Army getting now!! Tragic, really tragic that so many others were victimized by this monster when they didn't have to be! Is this really the kind of society we have become?!?!? Wake up people, it could happen to you or your loved ones!!

Ok, Larry S. You arrange for the termination of hundreds of overpaid prison guards and I will consider your proposal.
In the meantime you are only throwing more fuel on the fire that will eventually bankrupt the state of California. Productive citizens will continue to flee the exhorbitant taxes and you will be left with illegal migrants, government workers and newspaper reporters. And we'll see how that works out.

Wouldn't it be better to start early and insure the success of a child rather than have our tax dollars go to prisons later? It happens. Taxpayers spend FAR more on each prisoner in California than on each child in a school. Time to reverse that inequity. This push for preschool education may be part of Obama's priorities but the movement has been around at least since the Reagan administration. The difference is Reagan was all talk...Obama wants action. This country is FAR behind other countries academically. If we want our children and grandchildren to be competitive we need to invest in them. If not, we become a 3rd world country that can't look to the future with any hope.

This is just another meaty bone that Obama and his liberal friends wants to throw to the teachers…Read More and their unions. They are turning school into a babysitting service. 5 or 6 is a plenty early age to start attending school. K-12 in California is already gobbling up 40% or more of the State Budget. We don't have a never ending supply of money. It doesn't grow on trees and we the people are overtaxed now as it is. Let the kids get acclimated to life in their family environments up to 5 years of age. Then they can enter the school grind for the next 12 years.
What's next? A resident teacher in every maternity ward throughout California?

Also, our school said my son could go back to school as soon as he was treated, and they did not check for nits, nor do they have a no nits policy.

ESL is not Educational and English Learner Services. A student is classified as a English Learner…Read More if they enter kinder (or US) speaking any language, other than English (no matter how much in that language). The services that are provided to these students are adequate English Language Development (the way English is taught) and it must be administered by qualified teachers. Then, their progress is tracked until they become proficient in English. There for, yearly assessments are given to students to see if progress is being made. The English Learner Services Department is in charged of that, and making sure schools follow their protocols. The Migrant Department qualifies families that move because of agriculture work, and it's only for a period of time (I think 2-3 years). Many families exit their services because many of them aren't moving away. So the Migrant program has less students been serviced as before. The department has cut their staff, and services in the last few years.

Cynthia: I'm puzzled by your assertion that PV school district no longer has ESL or Migrant…Read More programs, since I just checked the Pajaro Valley Unified School District home page and see that among it's listed departments ar two identified as "Educational and English Learner Services" and "Migrant Services." The days must be pretty quiet in those departments if neither of them have any programs.

Where will the schools put them? Who will pay for IT staff to make sure they are operating properly? Who will pay the insurance for the computers, and for the extra electricity needed at each school site? Where are the facts behind the ability to implement this new plan? This plan needs more details explained.

I would expect ongoing district assessments are used more than CSTs for placement for intervention given that there are more of them and they are more closely aligned with what is going on the classroom. If its true that schools are using CST results for individual intervention decisions, then I think parents should know that (and realize its probably a bad idea). Your school site council should have info on that since its job is to monitor things like that.
In any case, anyone who wants to opt out should also ask their child. They should have a say in the matter.

Gail Ann, while you are correct on the parent opt out right please make sure and tell parents to ask…Read More the school/district what the STAR scores are used for with in the disrtict/school/grage-level. if the child is in the middle grades (7th and 8th are most important) these scores are used to make placement choices for high school courses. Many HS counselors will NOT look very closely at grades (A,Bs) because of the fear of grade inflation - unless you can make sure you child also have some non-biased, standardized (normed) test data their placement choices might be limited. If your child is a high performer you can have them start taking the PSAT in 8th grade (but they will be compared to 10th grade standards). At the lower grade levels the CST data is used to also make placement choices into intervention as well as higher level instructional clusters. Be well aware of the implications of withdrawing your child from the testing before you just exercise you right to "make a point"
