Senior, Disabled Property Owners Can Get Property Tax Exemptions

The Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors voted to make up to $100,000 available to implement the second year of a Pilot Program to assist low-income seniors and disabled residents who live in the unincorporated area of the county to stay in their homes. The Senior and Disabled Property Tax Postponement Pilot Program, which allows qualified low-income senior and disabled property owners to obtain a loan to postpone the payment of their property tax bill, is being administered by the Housing Authority of Santa Cruz County. 

To qualify, homeowners must meet the following criteria:
• Be at least 62 years of age, or be blind or disabled;
• Own and occupy property in unincorporated Santa Cruz County as his or her principal place of residence;
• Have a total household income of $35,500 or less;
• Have a maximum property tax bill of $7,985 for the installments due in December of 2013 and April of 2014; and
• Have at least 20% equity in the property.The fee to apply is $50.00, and it is non-refundable. 

Applications and application instructions can be obtained on the Housing Authority website at www.hacosantacruz.org or by calling the Housing Authority at (831) 454-9455 ext 329. Completed applications will continue to be received by the Housing Authority on a first come, first served basis through 5:00 p.m. on October 15, 2013.
