Help Paint the Library Mural This Weekend

The high-flying piece of public art is a project of Scotts Valley Artisans.

The third Mural-in-a-Day community event will be this weekend at the Scotts Valley Library.

The aviation-themed mural already is mapped out on the side of the building. It pays tribute to Santa Cruz Sky Park, the aviation field that operated for 36 years near the current site of the library.

The design came from Santa Cruz artist Jen Raynes, who won the contest to plan to public art piece. She will be the "master muralist" during the weekend painting session.

Santa Cruz artist Aidan McCarthy added additional design elements.

Up to 50 artists and volunteers will help fill in the mural this weekend. The Mural-in-a-Day project will run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. Call 831-439-9094 to volunteer for either or both days.

The event is organized by Scotts Valley Artisans, a nonprofit community art center. The group also painted a mural in tribute to the Ow family at the Kings Village Shopping Center in May.
