Youth Shakespeare to Present a New Take on 'Romeo and Juliet'

Young thespians to perform Romeo and Juliet this weekend.

The young thespians participating in Scotts Valley Performing Arts’ Youth Shakespeare program will present a new take on William Shakespeare's much loved Romeo and Juliet July 20-22 at St. Philips Episcopal Church, where the sanctuary with be miraculously transformed into a theatrical set.

Directed by Lisa Kirk-Williams, the action takes place on the Island of Verona, somewhere in the Caribbean, where two rival groups of pirates disturb the civil society. Swashbuckling sword fighting adds to the excitement of this timeless tale of woe.

Romeo and Juliet is known for some of the most beautiful poetry in the English language and this adaptation brings the poetry to life on the local stage. A few extra characters will be introduced to give roles to a more contemporary cast of mixed ages. Classical music of the time period will be performed by local harpist Alexandra Romanoff, along with other guest musicians.
