Why Are Outdoor Boot Camps So Popular?

Outdoor Boot camps provide intense workouts and a higher calorie burn than traditional gym workouts.

In 2008, when I launched my first outdoor boot camp and personal training business, the market for outdoor fitness classes was just heating up. Now, three years later it's still booming. It seems that everywhere I look, there are new outdoor boot camp classes starting everywhere. Even gyms are catching on and promoting their own outdoor classes.

So, why is this fitness craze so popular and seemingly standing the test of time?

It's simple—they're effective. Outdoor workouts, unlike their indoor counterparts, tend to help exercisers to burn more calories in a shorter period of time. With an outdoor class, teachers make use of the sand and grass when having participants run, and because it provides less spring than a gym floor or treadmill, you are forced to work harder and, in turn, burn more calories!

Another reason outdoor boot camps are effective is due to their intensity. The outdoors provides a lot of room for serious circuit exercises and room to run. This intensity increases your calorie burn for the rest of the day and throughout the week. This is often called the "after-burn" effect.
