Pedestrian Hit on Highway 17

San Jose woman hit by pickup truck while walking across Highway 17.

A 43-year-old San Jose woman walking on Highway 17 was hit by a car, causing the closure of both southbound lanes of the highway early Tuesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Diane Berania was walking in the lanes of the highway near Summit Road at approximately 2:27 a.m. when she was hit by a Ford F150. According to Central Coast News, the CHP received calls of a woman running on the highway screaming before the accident occurred.

Maria Camara, 69, the driver of the Ford, was within the southbound lanes when her truck struck Berania.

Berania sustained major injuries and was airlifted to Valley Medical Center. Camara was not injured.

The CHP is still investigating why was walking across the highway.
