A day of fun and camaraderie mark the start of the girls' softball season.

Under sunny skies, the Scotts Valley girls’ softball league held its Opening Day Ceremonies Saturday at the Siltanen Park softball fields.

The day brought out 270 girls ages 5-12, who covered the fields in an assortment of colorful uniforms. The girls displayed team spirit with matching hair ties and unique socks in anticipation of the new season.

Their are four divisions represented this year.

Coach Margaret Andersen has been coaching softball for the past five years. Her coaching philosophy includes inspiring the girls to have fun, teach them basic skills and instilling confidence.

"The sport is secondary,” Anderson said. "It’s important to me to educate, build teamwork and provide positive life-long memories for every player.”

Softball cheers are one key part in softball and can be heard from most team benches. The orange and black team, the Crush, in the junior division had fun on their bench Saturday with some creative cheers.

Taylor Raymond plays on the senior team, the Rockies. She has played since t-ball with this year being her last year with Scotts Valley Softball. She shared with me a popular softball chant: "We want a single. Just a little double. T-R-I, triple, home run “Marissa.”
