Scotts Valley’s CrossFit Maxim is Stepping Up the Game

New owner was the prototype for the CrossFit Kid's program.

David Shanahan believes exercising in a class setting is the best way to get physically fit.

"In a class structure, people tend to concentrate more," said Shanahan, the new owner of CrossFit Maxim, formerly known as CrossFit North Santa Cruz located at 300 Technology Circle in Scotts Valley.

The facility, under its new ownership, has been open now for 45 days, with three trainers and Shanahan leading the way.

"The CrossFit program is function fitness,” Shanahan said. “The training is different from the gym.   Clients find they perform at a high intensity by using everyday movements in life. It’s a quick one hour efficiency work out, with semi-personal training.”

Affiliated nationally with CrossFit, the gym doesn't use floor exercise machines, instead utilizing equipment such as free weights and medicine balls. Clients run, row, jump rope, climb rope and carry or throw large medicine balls. Olympic weightlifting techniques, as well as dumbbells, power-lifting, gymnastic rings and pull-up bars are all part of the unique pre-determined program for the day’s workout.

Shanahan is accustomed to the CrossFit methodology and started working out at the fifth original Crossfit gym at the age of 9 in San Diego. He was the core of the CrossFit Kids program and known as the "Original Kid Prototype" that made the program successful. He became a certified instructor at the age of 13 and has traveled to over 80 gyms across the country to hone his training skills.

"Training in the gym and running classes is the standard for me,” Shanahan said. “I grew up doing this.”

Shanahan has used his CrossFit developed fitness to run marathons and play soccer for Manchester United's youth development team and the La Jolla Nomads, one of the best youth soccer programs in the country.

He says he hopes to pass along the CrossFit fitness skills he has learned to the youth of Scotts Valley.   Shanahan has noticed that the community is very sports minded and welcomes any sport team to work out at CrossFit Maxim to develop fitness skills that will increase their athletic interests.
