Scotts Valley 4-H Club Invites Community to Open House Monday

4-H members will display their projects from archery to robotics to ukuleles.

On Monday, August 27, the Scotts Valley branch of the 4-H Club invites the community out to see what they've been working on all year—and they've been up to a lot.

Club members of the 75-member youth development club will be giving presentations and demonstrations on the projects they've been most passionate about this year, and they range from public speaking, and robotics to cheese making, market animals and hand spinning. And that is only the beginning.

Galina Cantey, 14, Vice President of the local 4-H chapter, is in her fifth year, and is passionate about the Guitar Project, which has won awards on both the county and state levels.

"The importance of the guitar project is to get kids to start picking up the guitar," said Cantey. "We teach them three or four basic chords that they can learn fairly easily and they can go learn a ton of songs with those three chords."

Galina encourages new members that it's not all about animals at 4-H, although there are members who do devote their work to their animals. New members are welcome to pursue and share whatever passion they may have.

"We definitely encourage new parents to come in, like we have one person who is going to do a bicycle project. Rather than have the same five projects every year we try to come up with fresh new ideas," said Cantey.

Monday's open house is the best way for new and prospective members to learn what 4-H is all about and to get inspired.

Cantey, a home schooled kid, says 4-H has helped her in many ways.

"It's helped me so much with my speaking, I used to be so shy when I first started and now im not anymore," she said.

She also loves the fact that 4-H is a non-judging place where everyone is welcome. Members come from all different backgrounds, and their ages range from five to 18.

"For other kids its amazing because it’s like a safe place away from school because everyone is nice in 4-H and they’re not going to judge you on your appearance. Everyone is equal," said Cantey, who hopes for a big turn out on Monday.

Anyone who becomes a member on Monday also recieves a free hat!

The Welcome to 4-H Open House is on Monday, August 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the Community Covenant Church, 2700 El Rancho Drive, Scotts Valley.
